Final Exams and Certification

Once you have completed the British Columbia online hunter education course, you must meet with a BCWF CORE Examiner to complete your certification process.

There are 2 required tests that must be taken with the CORE Examiner, after the online portion:

  • Written Exam
  • Practical Firearms Handling Exam

Written Exam

The written exam consists of 75 multiple choice questions and is based on the online material and the BC Hunting and Trapping Regulation Synopsis. You must get 56 out of 75 to pass the written exam. A fee is payable to the instructor for administering the exam. If the exam is failed, you must retake the exam at a later date and another fee will be required.

Please bring a copy of the BC Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis with you to your written exam. You will be able to use this reference during the written exam. You can download a version here.

The practical firearms handling exam includes the handling of 2 of the 5 firearm action types, identification of ammunition and loading and unloading of ammunition. You must achieve 23 out of 30 to pass this exam. The CORE Examiner will provide the firearms.

If you have completed the Canadian Firearm Safety Course (CFSC), you are exempt from the firearm handling exam. You must show proof to the Examiner with the CFSC report.

Note: a Possession Only Licence (POL) or Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) is not acceptable for the exemption of the firearm handling exam.

Certification

When both of the exams have been completed, you will receive a document of completion from the CORE Examiner. You are then required to send this form, along with a $30 administration fee payable to the BCWF to obtain a CORE Graduate Certificate.

When you receive the CORE Graduate Certificate, go to your local Service BC Office and request a BC Fish and Wildlife ID. There is no cost for this card. You will just need to show your CORE Graduate Certificate, prove you are a BC Resident and meet the minimum age requirements. With the RHNC you can now purchase a hunting licence and enter the limited entry hunting draw.
